Mäusegerste - Was ist das überhaupt?
Mäusegerste oder umgangssprachlich auch gerne als „Schliafhansl‘“ bezeichnet, ist eine Wildform der Getreide-Gerste. Sie wächst auf Wiesen und Feldern sowie an Wegrändern und gedeiht auch im städtischen Bereich z. B. unter Bäumen, in Grünstreifen oder zwischen Steinen. Dort wächst sie durchschnittlich 20 bis 30 Zentimeter hoch. Ihre Blütezeit dauert von Anfang Mai bis Ende Oktober.
Abschütteln hilft nicht
Viele Hunde mussten bereits schmerzhafte Bekanntschaft mit der wilden Gerste machen. Und Abschütteln hilft nicht: Die Grannen auf den Ähren der Pflanze haben winzig kleine Widerhaken, die sich im Fell, in den Ohren oder Augen und häufig zwischen den Zehen unserer Tiere festhaken. Gerne bohren sie sich in weiterer Folge in die Pfoten oder in weiche Hautstellen wie Zehenzwischenräume, Genitalbereich, Nase, Achseln, oder Augenlider. Nicht rechtzeitig entdeckt und entfernt, können sie von dort an auch ins Gewebe wandern.
Spaziergang mit schmerzhaften Folgen
Dringen die Grannen mithilfe ihrer Widerhaken über das Tier in Ohren, Nasenlöcher und Pfoten ein, verursachen sie ernst zu nehmende Beschwerden wie eitrige Mittelohrentzündungen, schwere Entzündungen unter den Pfoten oder Abszesse.
Kontrolle nach jedem Ausflug
Hundehalter sollten ihren Hund nach jedem Spaziergang sorgfältig nach Grannen absuchen, besonders an den Pfoten, den Zehenzwischenräumen und Ohren! Entdeckt man bei seinem Hund eine Granne, sollte sie vorsichtig mit einer Pinzette herausgezogen werden, denn: Es ist wichtig, Grannen an der Eintrittspforte zu entfernen, damit sie nicht weiterwandern und gesundheitliche Komplikationen auslösen.
Wann ist es Zeit für den Tierarzt?
Bleiben Grannen unbemerkt, dringen sie tiefer in den Gehörgang, die Nase und die Haut des Hundes ein. Dann müssen sie beim Tierarzt operativ entfernt werden. Die Symptome: Geschwollene Augen, andauernde Niesattacken und blutiger Nasenausfluss können auf Grannen in der Nase hindeuten, starkes Kopfschütteln auf Grannen im Gehörgang, hinken, ständiges Lecken an der Pfote oder anderen Körperstellen auf eingedrungene Grannen in der Haut.
Tipps:
- Meide Spaziergänge im hohen Gras oder Orte, wo Mäusegerste vermehrt vorkommt.
- Bei langhaarigen Hunden ist es hilfreich das Fell in den Zehenzwischenräumen und Ohren zu kürzen.
- Am Wichtigsten ist: nach jedem Spaziergang das Fell des Hundes gründlich absuchen und Grannen sofort entfernen!
- Das hilft auch um ungebetene Gäste wie Zecken frühzeitig zu erkennen!
